Decatur softball, baseball teams win openers against Eureka Springs

DECATUR -- The Decatur Bulldog softball team opened its season in style, with a victory. It is the beginning of what could be a dream season for the team this year.

Decatur traveled east April 7 to take on the Eureka Springs Highlanders for the 2015 season opener and the first game for new softball coach Anna Wilkins.

Cameron Shaffer pitched for the Decatur team. She allowed only three runs.

On the other side of the equation, the batting abilities for the Bulldogs proved to overwhelm the Highlander pitching staff which allowed over 40 base hits. The final score was 35 to 3, Decatur, a remarkable start for a team made up of mostly sophomores and juniors.

The Decatur softball team traveled south for its second game of the season against the JC Westside Rebels April 9. The team did not fare as well this outing as two days earlier. The Westside Rebels handed the Bulldogs their first loss of the season, 12 to 0.

In baseball, the Bulldogs also handed Highlanders a 11 to 1 loss in Eureka Springs April 7.

The team traveled to JC Westside April 9 to take on the Rebels at Coal Hill and suffered a 10-0 loss to the Rebels.

Both Decatur Bulldog softball and baseball teams will play home games on April 16 against the Hackett Hornets and April 20 against the Mountainburg Dragons. Games will be played on the ballfields at Edmiston Park. Start time is 4 p.m.
