GRAVETTE -- The Glenn Duffy Elementary PAWS Program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education. Effort is the word for this month. This is defined as the total work done to achieve a particular end. Our superhero Batman has been given credit to say, "The training is nothing. The will is everything." However, we encourage our students to use their training AND their best effort while working at school and at home.

Glenn Duffy kindergarten teachers talked to all students about social skills. Teachers showed children correct ways to deal with losing. As spring sports are in full swing, this will be an important skill to understand and use. The appropriate steps to deal with losing are: 1) take a deep breath and count to five; 2) say "everyone can't win every time"; 3) think whether you did your best and had a good time; then 4) decide whether you want to play again or do something else Kindergarten teachers are Teresa Spencer, Christina Hartman, Autumn Phillips, Misty Harris, Kristy Sanders, MaryJo Norberg, and Tabby Crane.

Mrs. Farmer's second grade class led students in a cheer to do well on their state tests, Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). Also attending our assembly were some of the Gravette Junior High Cheerleaders. They were able to lead students in cheers to motivate students taking the ITBS. Cheerleaders are from left to right: Heaven Day, Kaitlyn Lloyd, Bella Dell, Ashlee Newburn, Brynn Hilger, Haley Betz, Katie Garrett, and Emma Russell (coached by Faith Hendricks).

PAWS awards are given in the classroom, hallway, cafeteria, etc. as an incentive for students to practice the PAWS skill for the month. Students are recognized at monthly Rise & Shine assemblies. PAWS student of the month t-shirts are sponsored by the Glenn Duffy Elementary PTO.
