Tornado siren tests, cleanup planned

DECATUR -- The city of Decatur is planning several events over the next few weeks in an effort to keep the community a clean and safe place to live.

Chief Jeremy Luker of the Decatur Fire Department announced plans to test the city's tornado sirens on a monthly basis beginning in April and ending in October.

"We plan on testing the sirens on the first Tuesday of each month," Luker said. "These tests will begin between the hours of 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m and will last about 10 minutes."

If there is a threat of severe weather on test day, the sirens will be set off on the following Tuesday at the same time.

Beginning April 15, the fire department will begin a new billing system designed to save the city of Decatur money by cutting costs in materials, postage and staffing. Instead of the current postcard system, customers will receive a form by mail that they can simply remove the stub and mail it in with their payment.

In other city news, Benton County will hold an area-wide cleanup April 18 from 8 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Benton County Road Department on North Main St. in Decatur.

The city of Decatur will hold an annual city-wide cleanup Saturday, April 25. Articles for collection must be left curbside by 7 a.m.
