Old Timers Day planned for Saturday

WESTSIDE -- Folks in nearby Southwest City, Mo., are busy preparing for their popular annual spring event, Old Timers' Day, this Saturday, May 2.

A number of activities are planned and local residents always look forward to getting out to meet their neighbors and enjoy the fun as the weather warms up in the spring.

Sponsored by the Southwest City Commercial Club, the day will begin with a pancake breakfast at the Full Gospel Church. Serving will be held from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Don't eat too many pancakes, though, if you hope to compete in the scheduled races. A 5K run and a 1-mile "fun run" will kick off at 8 a.m. at Blankenship Park in the north edge of town.

Area crafters and food vendors will have booths with items on display from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and everyone is invited to come spend the day on Main Street and shop from their wares. Entertainment will be provided, beginning at 10 a.m. and continuing until 3 p.m.

A "Cow Patty Bingo" contest will be held at 10:30 a.m. and then the annual Old Timers' Day parade will progress down Main Street at 12:30 p.m.

Afternoon competitions will include an outhouse race at 1 p.m., a kiddie tractor pull at 1:30 p.m. and an "Ugly Feet Contest" at 2:15. Other reasons to stick around for the afternoon are the cash drawings. The first cash drawing, for $100, will be at 1 p.m. Then there will be a drawing for $200 at 2 p.m. and one for $500 at 3 p.m.

The annual Old Timers' Day Rodeo, held in conjunction with the celebration, begins the previous evening. Performances will be held both Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2, at 8 p.m., at the rodeo arena a few miles south of town.

Commercial Club members invite everyone in the area to "round up" family members and friends and come into town to see what the local folks do for fun. They say, "We would like for you to attend this year's Old Timers' Day in friendly Southwest City!"
