GENTRY -- A 15 year-old Gentry girl was listed in critical but stable condition Monday morning after being struck by an automobile on Gentry Blvd. near the intersection of S. Collins Ave.

According to police, the 15-year-old allegedly attempted to cross the highway just after dark on Sunday evening and was struck by a northbound car driven by a 71-year-old man. According to the man and other witnesses, no one was able to see the girl enter the highway until it was too late to avoid the collision.

Gentry police closed down both northbound lanes of the highway until the injured pedestrian was transported by ambulance to a landing zone and the accident was cleared. The 15-year-old was airlifted by Mercy Life Line to a hospital in Springfield, Mo.

According to police, the driver of the car was transported to Siloam Springs Regional Hospital for routine drug and alcohol testing required in accidents involving serious and life-threatening injuries. While the accident remains under investigation, police indicated no violations or evidence of wrongdoing on the part of the driver of the automobile. Police stated that witnesses estimate the driver's speed at below the posted speed limit.
