Highfill appoints new attorney

HIGHFILL -- In addition to hearing and accepting reports, the Highfill City Council's only action on Aug. 11, was to approve the appointment of Jay Williams of Gentry to serve as the city's attorney.

According to Stacy Digby, Highfill's mayor, Steve Miller, Highfill's longtime attorney, was relieved of his duties at the end of July. The appointment of Williams as the city attorney was approved by a unanimous vote of council members present (Michelle Rieff and Ryan Evans were absent).

Council members were updated on an upcoming paving project funded by a state-aid street grant, with paving expected to be completed later this month or in early September. Among streets to be resurfaced were Digby, Holland and Peterson.

Gene Holland told the council that dirt work for the fire station addition was close to being finished. Then after concrete and concrete footers are poured, Quality Metals in Gentry will begin the building construction within 10 days of notification the site is ready.

Next month's meeting will take up two possible improvements to the city's water system: 1. Extending lines along Hutchens Road to serve eight new water customers and bring in $500 per month in additional water sales; 2. Looping lines (on the east side of the airport) which service Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport to improve water quality and reduce the need for flushing lines in the area.

According to James "Butch" Wiand, Tim Mayes, of ESI in Springdale, will be invited to next month's meeting to explain the proposed projects.

In addition, the city is requesting proposals for a full-service maintenance program for its 500,000 gallon sand-pipe water tank. Proposals will be accepted until Sept. 18.
