DECATUR -- With only a few days left before the start of another school year, students of the Decatur School District had a chance to check out their new classrooms, get locker assignments and catch up with old friends during an open house Aug. 13 at all three campuses.

Decatur Elementary, Decatur High and Decatur Middle Schools opened their doors to students and parents at 11 a.m. This allowed the students to pick up their class schedules, find their new lockers and classroom assignments and tour the many changes to the campuses that occurred over the summer.

With the opening of the north wing of Decatur Middle School, students had their first glimpse of the new computer lab and three refurbished classrooms.

This year, the district purchased several new banks of student lockers for the reopened hallway. An additional bank of lockers was moved from the main hallway at the high school and relocated to the middle school. Now all lockers at Decatur Middle School are enclosed in an interior hallway out of the elements, unlike their predecessors which were in an exterior hallway.

The high school band building also underwent restoration this past summer. A closet was taken out of the south end of the band building, opening up much-needed space for the band and choir programs.

Toby Conrad, Decatur High principal, noticed a change in his students' attitudes as they entered the building.

"Students were ready to learn," said Conrad. "The students were actually smiling as they walked through the building. Several told me that they couldn't wait for school to begin."

The 2015-16 school year began at 8 a.m. on Aug 17. For more information on the Decatur School District or to checkout upcoming sporting events. go to decatursd.com.
