School celebrates 'No Name-Calling Week'

GRAVETTE -- Students and teachers at Gravette Upper Elementary School enjoyed a variety of activities in celebration of National No Name-Calling Week Jan. 20-23. A slogan and quote was chosen for each day of the week and students dressed in accordance with the slogan, according to school counselor Jaymey Boston.

All students received kindness stickers, pencils, bookmarks and an activity book. For each day students participated in the spirit day theme they received a ticket. Tickets were put in a drawing for the grand prize, a kindness pencil pouch and backpack. Students who won prizes in the drawing were third-graders Stephanie Chun, Addilyn Bates, Mary Mahon, Fidel Carillo, Tristan Brunje and Yezenia Ramirez; fourth-graders Jeret Jarvis, Emelia Ericksson, Miracle Franks, Julie Harrison, Trey Branscum and Jesse Maciel; and fifth-graders Logan Ellis, Tanner Sterrman, Joe Lewis, Holly Brockmeyer, Hailey Baldwin and Alyssa Holland.

All week students were on a "Kindness Mission." Each class brainstormed ways to be kind and set goals to accomplish the acts of kindness. When the daily goal, an act of kindness, was completed, the students created a bumper stick to attach to a car representing their class on the cafeteria wall.

Local police officers and firemen helped kickoff the week on Monday by creating tunnels where bus riders and car riders entered the school. The policemen and firemen greeted the students and encouraged them to be kind.

"It was absolutely awesome," said Boston.

The high school softball team came on Wednesday and read books regarding friendship, bullying and how to deal with aggression to the students. Assemblies on Friday featured motivational speaker Rick Voisin and his "Courage to Change" program.
