Superintendent's contract extended n Jeff Gravette rehired by Decatur School Board

DECATUR -- The Decatur School District voted to extend superintendent Jeff Gravette's contract for an additional year.

The board met in executive session Jan. 19 to evaluate Gravette's first six months in the top position of the Decatur district.

School board members said they were very pleased with the progress the district has made since Gravette took over the superintendent's position from Larry Ben last July. They expressed their confidence that Gravette's leadership will continue to move the district toward its goals of offering every student a quality education.

"I look forward to being here through the time of the contract and hopefully well beyond that," Gravette said.

In other Decatur school board business, Gravette reported that the safe-room project at Northside Elementary is well under way, with the outside structure completed Jan. 16.

"We are about halfway through the project on the safe room," Gravette said. "The walls are up and the roof is on and the floor has been poured. Now it is all the trim work and put the rooms inside, bathrooms, heating and air, and plumbing."

The project was originally slated for completion by late May. However, with the relatively dry weather the region has experienced over the last several months, construction of the safe room is ahead of schedule.

"We hope to be in that building in April," said Gravette.

Once the safe room is completed, it will serve as a community storm shelter, as well as a gym for Northside Elementary.
