FFA members gather in Decatur

DECATUR -- Schools from the northwest Arkansas area gathered in Decatur Jan. 27 for the Future Farmers of America Ozark Federation Leadership contest.

Teams from Siloam Springs, Gravette, Pea Ridge, Rogers, Bentonville, Springdale, Rogers Heritage and Springdale Har-Ber gathered in Decatur for the regional contest hosted by the Decatur FFA.

Teams, as well as individuals, competed in six categories, including creed speaking, discussion meet, extemporaneous speaking, opening and closing ceremony, parliamentary procedure and prepared public speaking. The top two individuals and teams in each category move on to the Northwest District Leadership Contest held on the University of Arkansas campus in Morrilton on April 3.

Decatur had two members of its team finish second in the creed speaking and discussion meet categories of the contest.

"Sam Goble was second in the discussion meet contest and Alison Watson was second in the creed speaking contest," said Lisa Barrett, Decatur FFA sponsor. "I'm proud of all my kids who competed in this contest."

Decatur had two other students finish in the top 10 in two categories. Lacy Jo Barrett finished fifth in the discussion meet contest, and Kara Gregory finished 10th in the creed speaking contest.

Barrett was pleased with the success of this year's event and hopes to host the event again in the near future.

Contest Results (first and second-place):

Creed Speaking -- Sommer Tomlin of Bentonville, Alison Watson of Decatur;

Discussion Meet -- Will Clark of Bentonville, Samantha Goble of Decatur;

Extemporaneous Speaking -- Laurel Mayo of Gravette, Ashley Rogers of Siloam Springs;

Opening and Closing Ceremony -- Siloam Springs, Rogers;

Parliamentary Procedure -- Springdale High, Springdale Har-Ber High School;

Prepared Public Speaking -- Nolan Rogers of Heritage in Rogers, Nathania McKenzie of Gravette.
