Screening committee appointed to hire new Gentry football coach

GENTRY -- Gentry School Board, at its Jan. 12 special meeting, approved a screening committee to hire a new football coach for the Gentry School District. According to adopted policy, a screening committee is used to fill high-profile positions in the district.

Included on the committee are Gentry High School principal Brea Harper; Larry Cozens, principal of the middle school; Beau Collins, high school teacher and coach; Darren Ward, high school teacher and coach; Brian Little, high school dean of students and athletic director; Rick Still, parent representative; Jonathan Nance and Jim Ennis, Jr., community representatives; and Gary Williamson, representing the school board.

Numerous other community members were suggested, as well as interested board members. The final selections in these two categories were made by drawing names from a hat.

Having a student representative on the committee was discussed, but the board elected instead to allow students to participate in an "ad-hoc" subcommittee of interested students and to ask the official committee to take their suggestions and input under advisement in the selection process.

Cozens will chair the first meeting. He said the first step in the process will be to identify what is wanted in a coach. Then the applications will be reviewed and interviews will begin.

As of Monday, there were some 38 applications for the coaching post.
