GRAVETTE -- There's a new eating place open on Gravette Main Street, just in time for treating your Fourth of July guests. If you choose to have a picnic the weekend of the Fourth, the folks there can help you with sandwiches and sides to pack in your basket.

Owners Byron and Tracy Warren and their daughter Skyler opened Fire Station 29 Pub and Grill at 116 Main Street N.E. last Friday. Business was so brisk on opening day that they ran out of food about half an hour before closing time.

Although Warren is a veteran of several barbecue competitions, this is the first time he has owned a restaurant. He recently retired from the Siloam Springs Fire Department and his experience there helped him choose the name for the restaurant. Twenty-nine was his helmet number at the Siloam fire station and it was also the number of the Hiwasse Fire Department which merged with the Gravette department when Hiwasse was annexed.

The sign atop Fire Station 29 features a fireman's badge, and light fixtures in the pub are topped with firemen's helmets. There are only eight stools at the counter inside the building, but 133 diners can be seated on the deck. They can choose to sit at tables or on stools at the counter surrounding the deck. A big screen TV is available for viewing sporting events or keeping up with the latest news. A rustic building at the back of the deck houses Warren's smoker and bathrooms for the business.

Barbecue is the backbone of the pub's menu. Diners can craft their own barbecue plate by choosing from smoked sausage, brisket, pulled pork and chicken. A plate with one meat is $8.29 and two meats cost $9.49. The meal comes with two sides. Side items include potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans, fried green beans, fried okra and mac and cheese.

Diners in the mood for a lighter meal can choose a barbecue sandwich on a toasted kaiser bun. Reuben, Philly cheese and gyro sandwiches are also available. A side and drink can be added for only $2.

Other menu items at Fire Station 29 include appetizers and salads. Appetizer choices include hot wings, nachos, and fried mushrooms seasoned with garlic and served with a side of cheese. The house salad features lettuce, cheese and Italian dressing and a grilled chicken salad is available with a choice of several dressings.

Pepsi products are served, and a variety of beers is on tap. Other beverage choices are hard cider and beers in bottles and cans, both 16 ounce and 20 ounce sizes.

Fire Station 29 will feature daily specials. All menu items are available for takeout, and orders for catering are also welcome.

The pub and grill is open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. It is closed Sunday and Monday.

The Warren family invites everyone in the area to come and check out the new place in town. The atmosphere is casual and friendly, the food is tasty and well-prepared and the location is easy to find. The telephone number is 479-344-6148 if you want to call ahead and have an order ready on arrival.
