DECATUR -- It will not be long before the Decatur Bulldog volleyball team takes the court for its first game Aug. 24 against the Pea Ridge Blackhawks at Lloyd Peterson Gym.

Preperations for that match began when coach Jessica Hartman and assistant coach Jessi Castagna sent in all the paperwork nessecary to start a team at Decatur. Now, with everything in place, Hartman and Castagna began to recruit members for the first Decatur High girls' volleyball team. Within a few weeks, the team had 18 members pounding the floors at Peterson Gym, running practice drills and learning the basics about this new sport.

The team traveled south to participate in the University of Arkansas Volleyball Position Camp held at Barnhill Arena July 6. The all-day event allowed the Decatur team to learn the inner workings of the sport as well as the key postions that make up a team. The girls received training as setters, middle blockers, outside hitters, liberos and defensive specialists. Haley Burden received the all-camp award, which was the only one given during the one-day event.
