SULPHUR SPRINGS -- Alumni of the Sulphur Springs High School from at least five states gathered at the former Sulphur Springs High School building last weekend to enjoy visiting, reminiscing and sharing stories of their school days, as well as present day activities. States represented were Arkansas, Missouri, Rhode Island, Texas and Oklahoma.

The Sulphur Springs High School consolidated with the Gravette school in 1965. Reunions have been held periodically and annually during recent years.

The group enjoyed a corn bread and beans dinner in the school lunchroom Friday evening. The meal was prepared by ladies of the Sulphur Springs Friendly Neighbors Club. Forty-three meals were served. The ladies also prepared a Saturday fried chicken noon meal for the group, which met at the same location.

Plans were made to hold the 2016 alumni reunion the first weekend in June. Jim Brown and his wife, Anna, along with Joe Mills, all Sulphur Springs alumni, will plan the event again next year.

Following the evening meal Friday, the group, along with other area residents, met at the Barber Auction building to enjoy a film about the military and other career of Marvin Day, another alumni, who now resides in Coventry, R.I.

The movie, "Four Uniforms -- the Marvin Day Story," was the subject of a story in the May 23 Westside Eagle Observer. Day's son Steven, his daughter Michele McGaughey; his niece Norman Day Derr and his brother Glen Day were among those present for the showing.

Among alumni and their spouses who attended were: the Jim Browns, the Edward Ksaras, Joe Mills, Georgia and Jerry Smithwick, Rocky Eldred and wife, Evelyn Eldred, Carroll and Jo Crom, Mike Brown, Dodie and Louise Evans, Butch and Marilee Todd, David Fountain, Robert Boyd, Jim Coverston, Myrtle Presley, the Bill Boyds, Larry Burge and June Murray.

Members and cooks of the Friendly Neighbors Club were Maurine Styles, Martha Kreder, Vera Moorman, Violet Augustin, Mac Huntsman, Barbara Wasman, Rhonda Barnett and Amy Richardson.

The Sulphur Springs museum was open later Saturday for persons to view the many exhibits which depict the history of Sulphur Springs, which once was a booming tourist town as well as the home of John Brown University and later Wycliffe Bible Translators.
