...About Town with Decatur Mayor Bob Tharp

June is highlighted this year as "Pool Month" in Decatur, and the Arkansas Revenue Office is open at city hall.

Decatur opened its pool on June 1 with a free swim day, and 2015 looks like an awesome year for the pool.

The pool is open Monday through Friday from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. Attendance has been strong every day so far this summer and the trend is expected to continue all summer.

Changes made this year include longer weekday hours and being closed Saturday and Sunday. The pool is in great operational condition with new renovation planned, along with new paint scheduled for next year.

Prices are $2 per visit and a pool pass for the season can be purchased for $50. Pool parties are also available. For more details, call city hall at 479-752-3912.

The Arkansas Revenue Office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. (closed 12 to 1 p.m. for lunch) every Wednesday at Decatur City Hall. All Revenue Office transactions can be completed at Decatur City Hall on this day except assessments, which need to be completed online or by visiting any of the other offices in the county.

I really want to encourage you to use this benefit in our town and save your time, the lines are never long!

The Decatur City Council, in conjunction with city staff, is working on numerous projects, including a farmers' market and community garden. Additional playground equipment at Royce Johnson Memorial Park has been ordered. A grant application has been submitted for additional sidewalks from Arkansas Highway 102 at the middle school entrance east to Bredehoeft Road, then south to Stadium Street, then west on Stadium Street to the high school. A sidewalk from Rooster Street to Stadium Street will also be built. The city applied for a grant to build a large walking trail around Veterans Park through a Blue and You grant from Blue Cross and Blue Shield. Grant money is also being sought to continue work on a personnel elevator at city hall to make the second floor functional. Work is being done to build a new soccer field for the youth program and to complete other projects.

The Decatur Chamber of Commerce is making plans for this year's annual Decatur Barbecue.

City committees that are functional today include: Library, Planning and Zoning, Parks, Cemetery, Economic Development and Historical Committees. Anyone interested in serving Decatur is welcome to help make a difference.

About Town for the month of July will highlight the 61st Annual Decatur Barbecue.

Ways to stay connected with local news and events are to read the Westside Eagle Observer newspaper and check the city's website at www.decaturarkansas.com. People may also email the mayor at [email protected] or follow the mayor's Facebook page.

My personal prayer is that God Blesses each of you.
