Cleanup underway at Lake LaBalladine

Photo by Dodie Evans Cleanup of Lake LaBalladine in the Sulphur Springs park was under way recently in preparation for the Sulphur Springs Day activities scheduled June 27. The event is an annual Independence Day celebration, held a week earlier this year. It will include a car show, music, various activities and a street dance and fireworks that evening. Dredging of silt and gravel in the big lake will allow a fishing derby that morning for area children. The lake will be stocked by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. The lake, also enjoyed by swimmers, has been a focal point in the community since it was built in the late 1880s. Portions of the original dam, constructed of native limestone, are part of the current structure which was repaired after it was partially washed out during a flood in the latter part of the 1900s.
