Decatur High students received near-record-number of scholarships

DECATUR -- Several students were recognized for their academic achievements during the Decatur High School Academic Awards and Scholarships program held at Peterson Gym on May 11.

Thirty businesses and organizations, including the Decatur Chamber of Commerce, Grand Savings Bank, Decatur Alumni Association, National Honor Society and Future Farmers of America were on hand to present nearly $400,000 in scholarships to the class of 2015.

Sixteen Decatur seniors received money from the Arkansas Lottery Academic Challenge, totaling $224,000. Those receiving the lottery scholarships included Samantha Goble, Lacy Barrett, Ger Vang, Victor Urquidi, Hector Aguilar, Pheng Lee, Jackie Vargas, Joey Barnes, Mario Urquidi, Matt Lydon, Courtney Kumm, Jesse Bruce, Terry Kell, Jessica Jessen, Allan Castaneda and Kaiti Stutz.

The scholarships each senior received will help pay for tuition, books, supplies and living accommodations during their time in college.

Several Decatur graduates also received substantial scholarship from several major colleges in Arkansas.

Samantha Goble received a scholarship to attend the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith; and Carlos Ocampo and Jesse Bruce, to attend the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville next fall.

The program concluded with the recognition of several outstanding members of the freshmen, sophomore and junior classes.
