About Town (Special Edition) By Bob Tharp, Mayor of Decatur

Entering our town, you pass a small green sign that indicates you are entering our city limits. What are the numbers on that sign? 3,100, 1,300, or 1,699? Read further to find the answer.

One of the numbers listed above represent our town's population taken in 2010. We believe our town has grown substantially lately, but we will not know how much until the next census, which will be taken in 2020.

Decatur is ours and, because it is ours, we need to come together and make a difference. Working together, we can do anything we want. As your JP on the Quorum Court representing District 11 years ago, it was not difficult to see we are diverse, having an east-side Benton County and a west-side Benton County. As the county grows, we will probably see new growth on the west side -- that is us. Together we can make ready our town for that growth.

Our "Town Hall Reception" is now scheduled for March 19, from 6 to 8 p.m., in the community room at Decatur City Hall. At this meeting you will have the opportunity to meet city leaders and to sign up for one or more of these community committees. Additionally, our recently formed Historical Committee is now open for new members. 1,699.

I am asking you all to join with your elected officials, community committees and volunteer groups as we make an awesome community in which to work and live. We'd love to hear your ideas for other possible committees.

Presently, committees that are functional are: Library, Planning and Zoning, Parks, Cemetery, Economic Development and Historical Committees. Anyone interested in serving Decatur is welcome to help us make a difference.

This will be a great time to join our Chamber of Commerce and your Chamber leadership will be in attendance.

... about Town for the month of April will highlight our Volunteer Fire Department.

Did you find the number? Oh yes, our current population is 1,699.

God Bless each of you.
