DECATUR -- The Decatur Chamber of Commerce is hosting its second annual "Come Fly With Me" 5K and color fun-run May 16, starting at 9 a.m., on the runway at the Crystal Lake Air Park.

The Air Park airport is located just off Crystal Lake Road, one mile north of Decatur on Arkansas Highway 59 and then east on the Lake road.

About 50 runners from around Northwest Arkansas participated in last year's event. The runners ranged in age from 16 months (moms pushed them in a stroller) to 60 years.

It was the first time runners were allowed to run along the 3,865-foot-long runway at Crystal Lake Air Park. Everyone agreed that it was an experience worth repeating.

The 5K course is much the same as last year, with only a few modifications. Runners last year started from the right side of runway 31 and ran the perimeter of the runway 31/13 to the service road by the hangars. They then followed the road uphill to Lloyd Peterson's old home and back. Once the runners returned to the hangars, they proceeded north, following the entire length along the perimeter of the airstrip and ending at the start and finish line on the south end of runway 31.

The color run, which immediately follows the 5K, will start at the midfield service road and proceed to the 13 end of the runway and back.

Cost to participate in the 5K run is $20 per person, with grades K-12 free. The color run is free.

Almost two years ago, investors Mike Trusty and Kris Shoemake, of Little Rock, bought the Crystal Lake Airport and surrounding property from L&L Farms, with plans to turn it into an aviation community.
