Gravette Library offers more than just books

GRAVETTE -- The Gravette public library is a great place to check out books but this building, located at 407 Charlotte Street just east of the Boys and Girls Club, offers much more than just books.

The popular summer reading program is scheduled to kick off on Thursday, June 4. This five-week program, for children ages 4 to 12, has as its theme "Every Hero Has a Story." The sessions, which begin at 11 a.m., are free and open to all children in the area. The opening session on June 4 will feature "Disney Super Heroes -- Villians and Sidekicks."

In addition to books, the library has a number of computers for surfing the Internet. Computer terminals are available for both children and adults. The library also offers E-books which can be downloaded onto a patron's tablet or other device. E-books are checked out just like regular books.

GED classes for persons in the area who desire to complete their requirements for a high school diploma are held at the library. Signup will begin in August for the next round of classes.

The library has outgrown its current building and soon will be moving to a new location on Main Street. Bids are being solicited for renovation of the old city hall building and the former Duffield's building next door.

Several fundraisers are planned to secure funds for the library's remodeling and building program. A Gravette man, Michael Williams, and his partner are entered in the Missouri 340, the world's longest river race, on the Missouri River July 28-31. They are seeking pledges for a set amount or so much for each mile they complete and will donate proceeds to the library. Pledges may be submitted at the library or by calling Williams at 787-0861.

The third annual library gala is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Barn at Big Springs on Beaty Road, with tickets available at the library or from any library commission member. Finally, the annual Renaissance Fair will be held in Old Town Park on Saturday, Nov. 7, with many exciting events for persons of all ages. Put these dates on your calendar, plan to attend and support your area library and help with its growth.
