Board approves expulsion, roof repair

GENTRY -- In a special meeting on Nov. 2, the Gentry School Board expelled a student and approved repair to the roof of the school district building used by the Gentry Headstart Program.

According to unapproved meeting notes, the board unanimously approved a permanent expulsion recommendation made by Randy Barrett, school district superintendent. The student was a high school student and the reason for the expulsion was sexual misconduct. Neither the student nor parents appealed the expulsion.

Barrett updated the board on the timeline for superintendent evaluation, a process the district is piloting for the state. The process will begin this month with a parent, community and staff survey, along with the completion of a summary form based on last year's goals. The review will be in December and January, and goals and a professional growth plan will be developed for the next school year.

There was discussion regarding the building owned by the district and used by the Gentry Headstart Program. The building is in need of a new roof and some repairs in order to continue to be useful for the program. The program was regarded as providing a valuable service to the community directly and to the school district indirectly, according to the unapproved meeting notes. Barrett recommended that the board approve $15,000 for total repairs, including the re-roofing. The board agreed.

Lisa Flanagan's resignation as high school custodian was accepted and Clayton Kennedy was hired to be a special education teacher at the high school.
