Bulldog senior volleyball loses third straight, junior varsity wins

DECATUR -- In its first two meetings, the Decatur Bulldogs senior volleyball team managed two impressive victories over the Charleston Tigers. The third time around, however, turned out to be less of a charm as the Lady Tigers took their first win over the Lady Bulldogs in three straight sets.

The junior varsity Lady Bulldogs volleyball team took to the court for a scrimmage match against Charleston, in which the Lady Bulldogs managed a win against Charleston's junior varsity team, 2 sets to 1. This marked the second straight win for the junior varsity team, coming off a two-set victory over the Elkins Lady Elks on Sept. 24 at Peterson Gym in Decatur.

The senior varsity Lady Bulldogs had a tough go of it in the first set. Charleston won by 10 points, 25 to 15.

In the second set, Decatur kept up with Charleston, tying the game at 24 all. But the Lady Tigers managed two straight points to take the set, 26 to 24.

In what would be the final set, the Lady Bulldogs managed to keep pace with the Lady Tigers. But mistakes soon plagued Decatur, and Charleston pulled ahead and eventually won the third set, 25 to 18.

The momentum that fueled the five-game winning streak early in the season seems to have stalled, with the Lady Bulldogs losing their third straight match and bringing their overall season record to 5 and 4.

The Decatur volleyball team will be in action at home when the girls play the Farmington Cardinals on Oct. 6 at Peterson Gym in Decatur. Games begin at 4:30 p.m. They next travel to Elkins on Oct. 8 in the second of a four-game series with the Lady Elks. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
