Fifth graders describe lunar eclipse

GRAVETTE -- Last week, the Eagle Observer ran some photos of the supermoon lunar eclipse on Sept. 27, along with an article containing information on the somewhat unusual event. But what did area children think of the moon as it darkened and turned an eerie shade of red? Dorothy Hadley's fifth-grade students at Gravette Upper Elementary School wrote down their thoughts on the event. They are reprinted below.

Last night I saw the lunar eclipse. When I went outside to wait for everything to happen, the moon was dazzling. The lake was shining from the moonlight. After about one hour and a half there it was, the lunar eclipse! It was fascinating to see slowly the Earth cover the sun from the moon. It looked like very dark red. It was beautiful. Also, there wasn't bright light sparkling from the lake. But still, it was beautiful. I am grateful to see the lunar eclipse. Next time it comes around it will be 2033! So 18 years from now. Now you know all about my experience with the lunar eclipse. -- Mia Bassler

Last night I saw the lunar eclipse. It was so cool! It looked like one of the moons from scary movies. It looked like a full moon but with a shadow crept behind it. First, it was all reddish and I went back inside, but my mom called me back outside to see it. My sisters saw it too. They thought it was awesome! So everyone was gathered around my neighborhood and we all saw it together. Now you know all about my experience seeing the lunar moon. -- Audrey Houghton

Last night I saw the lunar eclipse. Last night I was coming home from Conway and I said, "Isn't that the lunar eclipse?" My mom said, "Yes, it is, son." We got to Russellville and the moon was half gone! "The moon is going away quickly," I said. When we got home the moon looked like a red shade. Last night I saw the lunar eclipse. It was the most beautiful moon I ever saw. It was like they actually took blood and put it in the moon. I sat there watching it change and it was everything everyone said it would be, beautiful! Now you know my experience seeing the lunar eclipse. -- Luke Coffee

Last night I saw the lunar eclipse. My dad was outside and my brother, aunt, uncle, neighbor and her dog, and I were all outside watching the lunar eclipse. It was the best experience ever and I'm really lucky because it only happens every 30 years. We were all having the best time and I think that it was a blood moon too. The stars were all shining like diamonds. It was so beautiful and cool. Now you know about my experience with the lunar eclipse. -- Paige Greer

Last night I saw the lunar eclipse. I got to look at it through binoculars. My meme said that there would be big waves. Also, that there is a gravitational pull. The reason it is red is because of the Earth's shadow. I saw a shooting star and sat in lawn chairs. Now you know all about my experience seeing the lunar eclipse. -- Shelby Spiva

Last night I saw the lunar eclipse. It looked like a bumpy ball in the shadows of the Earth. Also, it was reddish-copperish. The craters made it look even cooler. The way it transformed made it amazing! What I mean by transformed is it was so bright then turned to shadows. Now you know all about my experience with the lunar eclipse. -- Will Betz
