Decatur travels to Elkins, falls in volleyball match

DECATUR -- The Decatur Bulldog junior and senior varsity volleyball teams traveled south to take on the Elks of Elkins in a dual scrimmage Oct. 8.

The Bulldogs junior varsity continued its winning streak by beating the Elks in two straight sets. In the first set, the Bulldogs totally dominated the Elks, holding Elkins to only five points and taking the set, 25 to 5. It was a different story during the second set as Elkins found its game and stayed with Decatur through much of the set. But the Bulldogs pulled ahead by two and scored the final point, winning the set, 25 to 22, and the match, 2 to 0. This was the fourth straight win for the junior varsity.

The Bulldog senior varsity had a harder time with the Elks, losing the first set, 25 to 16. In the second set, Decatur pulled out to a commanding lead, 12 to 2. However, a rally by Elkins brought them to a 23 tie. In the end, the Elks pulled off two straight points to take the second set, 25 to 23.

In the third, Decatur managed to get the upper hand and battled to take the set, 25 to 23. The fourth set saw both teams battle it out. But, once again, the Elks pulled off two-straight points to take the set, 25 to 23, and the match, 3 to 1.

The Bulldog senior varsity is now 5 and 5 overall, with four games left in the season. Decatur was to travel to Lincoln Oct. 12. They return to Peterson Gym on Oct. 14 to take on Charleston in the last of a four-game series. The final home game for the Decatur volleyball team will be Oct. 19 as the Bulldog team bids farewell to its senior members. Then they will travel to Elkins Oct. 22 for the season finale.
