GRAVETTE -- PAWS ("Pawsitive" and Wise students) winners at Glenn Duffy Elementary School were honored at the year's second "Rise and Shine" assembly last week. Nick Douglas, Evelyn Bailey, Izzy Mayhew and Braeden Baker, all of Gravette, and Zane Banks and Bria Ingram of Bella Vista were recognized as PAWS Students of the Month for September.

The PAWS program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in relation to character education. Self-control, defined as using restraint or having power over your actions, was the word for this month. The trait was illustrated by using this quote from Thumper: "If you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all."

PAWS awards are given in the classrooms, hallways and cafeteria as an incentive for students to practice the PAWS skill for the month. Students are recognized at the monthly "Rise and Shine" assemblies and given T-shirts sponsored by the Glenn Duffy Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization.

School resource officer Chuck Skaggs was guest speaker for the assembly. He shared with the children some practical ways they can show self-control. He reminded them that they should be quiet in the hallways and keep their hands to themselves when they think about pushing someone. He said it was important to listen to teachers in class and to their parents at home. Skaggs visits the school daily and always encourages the good behavior he sees.

Second grade teachers presented a short lesson about sharing. This social skill is being emphasized during the month as part of the school's Positive Behavior Support System. When sharing, the teachers suggested 1) decide what you want or have been asked to share); 2) look at the person who wants you to share; 3) ask, "Would you like to play with this game (or share this activity) with me?" and 4) make room for the person to join you or give him the item you decided to share.

Another highlight of the assembly was recognizing several teachers through the Walmart Teacher Rewards Program. Bob Holloway and Shanda Nickson presented 25 $50 gift cards to classroom teachers at Glenn Duffy. The cards were provided by the Walmart Distribution Center and the Gravette Walmart store. The teachers will use the cards to provide student or classroom supplies for special projects or unique instructional needs.
