Decatur Homecoming parade changes routes this year

DECATUR -- The first home game of the 2015 Decatur Bulldog football season will bring the Mountainburg Dragons to Bulldog Stadium on Sept. 18. This will also be an early homecoming week for Decatur High School. Several activities are planned for game day, including the Decatur High homecoming parade.

This year's parade will be a little different, thanks to the combined efforts of Bob Tharp, Jeff Gravette and John Unger. The parade will move from the high school driveway to the downtown area of Decatur.

"We wanted to give the residents and local business a chance to get involved in this year's homecoming event," Tharp said. "This is our way of thanking the kids for the hard work and dedication to the sports program, school and the community."

The parade will begin at 1 p.m. outside the community room behind city hall. It will run down Maple Ave. to Main St., left on Main St. to Roller Ave., and left on Roller Ave. to Decatur High School.

Decatur Northside Elementary, Decatur Middle and Decatur High schools will participate in the event. There will be floats from each of the middle- and high-school classes andorganizations. The high school band all will also march in this event

"The elementary school kids will be bused back to the school from the cemetery," Gravette said. "This way, they don't have to walk the entire distant back to the high school."

Other events for the day include a pep rally introducing the homecoming court at around 1:45 p.m. in Peterson Gym. The public is invited to attend.

At 6 p.m., the homecoming queen will be crowned at Bulldog Stadium, prior to the Decatur-Mountainburg game.
