DECATUR -- The Decatur Lady Bulldogs' volleyball team extended its winning streak to five straight matches by defeating the Lady Highlanders of Eureka Springs at Peterson Gym in Decatur on Sept. 17.
The junior varsity teams from each school played first in a three-set match. The Lady Highlanders won all three sets by a narrow spread.
In the senior varsity match, the Lady Highlanders took the first set by six points, 25 to 19. The second set was much closer, with both teams tied at 24. The Lady Bulldogs reached 25 points first, but the rules state a team must win by two. The next two points went to Eureka Springs, making it a 26 to 25 contest. Decatur fought back, winning two straight points and gaining a 27 to 26 advantage. The Highlanders again tied the set at 27 before the Bulldogs added two more, making it a 29 to 27 set and the first for Decatur in the match.
Decatur gained the advantage as the Lady Bulldogs quickly overwhelmed Eureka Springs, 25 to 12 in the third. However, the Lady Highlanders gained the advantage late in the set after coming back from an eight-point deficit to take the fourth set and sending the match into another tie breaker.
Eureka Springs served first in the fifth set, but it was Decatur that scored first. In the end, the Lady Bulldogs took the final set, earning their fifth victory of the season.
