GENTRY -- An appreciation dinner will be held for Donnie Millsap at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 16, at the First Baptist Church in Highfill, with a full meal provided (without charge) for guests who come out to support Donnie Millsap and show their appreciation for him and his work over the years.

Millsap is fighting non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer that originates in the lymphatic system, the disease-fighting network of the body. He is currently undergoing treatments.

Known by students and youth for his big size and big beard, Millsap is also known for his big heart and his work with young people. At Gentry High School, he works with students who have in-school suspension to help them keep up with their studies and get back on track. Off-campus, he has been a youth leader at First Baptist Church in Highfill for many years and works to introduce youth to Jesus Christ and the Bible's teaching.

And he's still working. Though he's stepped down from some of his duties, he's still there -- even while undergoing cancer treatments which make him ill -- at both the school and his church for young people. He continues to spend time with youth, whether at his church or by taking them out for pizza, to guide them in the right direction. And many young people, now grown up, remember his work and influence in their lives.

The appreciation dinner on April 16 is first and foremost an opportunity for the community to come out and encourage and support Millsap in his battle with cancer. Those organizing the event are hoping many of those whose lives Millsap touched will come and encourage Donnie.

While it is not a fundraising event, those who wish to donate toward medical expenses related to Millsap's treatment may also do so through First Baptist Church.

All are welcome and invited to come out and offer to Donnie their support and encouragement.
