Pioneers come back after loss to Huntsville

GENTRY -- After being shut out by Huntsville on April 4, the Pioneers came back strong last week to defeat Greenland, 6-5, and Cedarville, 12-1.

Ayden Smartt pitched against visiting Huntsville on April 4; and though he allowed just two hits and no earned runs, the Eagles still came out on top, 2-0, when two Huntsville players scored in the fourth.

The Pioneers had no hits and no runs in the game. Eight Gentry batters struck out.

Greenland 5

The Pirates and the Pioneers were tied after six innings and neither team scored in the seventh, sending the 5-5 game into extra innings.

The Pioneers grabbed the lead in the top of the eighth when Sean Pierce singled to left and brought in Zac Adkins, who had hit a line-drive single to left. And the Pioneers held the Pirates scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the game, 6-5.

Dillon Matthews, Tanner Shipp and Myles McFerron all pitched in the game for Gentry. Matthews was credited with the win.

Cedarville 1

It was a blowout in the five-inning non-conference game in Cedarville on Thursday, with the Pioneers getting 17 hits and 12 runs and allowing Cedarville only three hits and one run.

Gentry sealed the game already in the top of the second, scoring five runs, and the Pioneers continued to add to their run tally each inning.

Cedarville's only run came in the bottom of the fifth on a Gentry error.

CJ Taylor had four RBIs in the game and hit a grand-slam home run in the second.

Wyatt Clark pitched for Gentry and struck out six. He allowed three hits in the game.
