Council approves work order, fire truck purchase

DECATUR -- Decatur City Council approved work on the swimming pool, a work order for sidewalk improvement to Roller Avenue and the purchase of a new fire truck when it met in the conference chamber at Decatur City Hall on April 11.

The council approved a work order for engineering design services for the phase II tap sidewalk improvement project on east Roller Avenue in Decatur. The agreement between McClelland Consulting Engineers, Inc., and the city of Decatur will go into effect April 11.

The east Roller project will extend the sidewalk from the north entrance of Decatur Middle School, where the current sidewalk ends, to Bredehoeft Street.

The project is budgeted for $162,680. The proposal would include improvements to the drainage system, construction of new sidewalks and driveways, pedestrian crosswalks, associated signage, localized grading and seeding and sodding.

The council heard a progress report by Mayor Bob Tharp on the city pool renovation project which was approved during the March 14 meeting. The old storage shack, restrooms and change rooms have been torn out and replaced with new timbers and cinder-block walls. James Boston, director of public works, reported that the pool itself was painted last fall. A Decatur Bulldog was painted at the center of the pool.

The project is expected to be complete in early May, and the pool will be ready for operation in mid May. A grand reopening will be scheduled as soon as the pool schedule is finalized.

The council approved an ordinance for short-term financing for a new fire truck for the Decatur Fire Department.

The Decatur Police Department will complete the renovation of its new station and the move is expected to be complete by the end of April. The new sign was installed last week.

Decatur City Council meets every second Monday of each month at 6 p.m. The first 30 minutes of every meeting is set aside for citizen comments and concerns. For more information, contact Decatur City Hall at 752-3912.
