HIGHFILL -- The Decatur High School band has earned many honors this school year. But none any greater than that on the night of April 20.

In one of the biggest events to honor the many military veterans in Arkansas, the band performed during the welcome-home ceremony of the Honor Flight in the lobby of Northwest Arkansas Regional Airport.

The Honor Flight took military veterans from Arkansas and Oklahoma on a tour of the many war memorials in Washington, D.C.

The flight returned to XNA around 9:40 p.m. to a crowd of more than 500 well wishers.

The 12 members who made up the Decatur band played patriotic music and military service songs. They performed alongside the Northwest Arkansas Men's Chorus. Their music filled the air throughout the entire expanse of the airport lobby.

It was a proud moment for those Decatur residents and officials who were fortunate enough to attend the event that night.

During the Decatur Reunion banquet in the community room at city hall April 23, Rob Hopkins, Honor Flight event organizer, praised the band for its superb performance during the event.

A special thank you goes out to Jesse Owens, band director, and the 12 members of the Decatur High School band for their hard work and dedication to making the music program a resounding success.
