Entries sought for fourth annual Dutch-oven cook off

GRAVETTE -- Entries are being sought for the fourth annual Dutch-oven cook off to be held on Gravette Day, Saturday, Aug. 13, on the grounds of the Gravette Historical Museum. Cooking begins at 7 a.m. and judging begins at 12:30. Gravette Day guests can sample the cooks' offerings at the public tasting to be held at 1:30. A tasting bowl, purchased for $5, will allow a person to sample all the teams' entries, but sponsors warn that you need to arrive early to get a taste because they often run out of samples.

Competition will be held in two divisions. In the three-pot division, entrants will be asked to prepare three dishes: a main dish, a side dish and a dessert. Judging will be based on originality, presentation, taste, teamwork and creativity. Entry fee is $20 per team. In the novice division entrants will only be required to prepare one dish. Entry fee will be $15 a team. Children 10 and older may enter if accompanied by an adult.

Cook-off prizes will be awarded following the judging in early afternoon. First-place winner in the three-pot division will receive a $150 cash prize, with the second-place team receiving $100 cash and third place $75. First-place team in the novice division will be awarded a $50 first-place prize, second place $25 and third place $10.

The museum will be open all day, and folks attending the cook off will be able to tour the museum and annex if they wish. They will have the opportunity to purchase raffle tickets for several nice prizes donated by cook-off sponsors, and popcorn and other concessions will be available on the grounds. The Billy V. Hall Senior Activity Center will be selling cookies, and the Old Town String Band will be providing musical entertainment during the afternoon.
