My old way of life has flown the coop

That dang old cow kicked me so hard that I turned over up high and could see her waiting for me below! I knew I was feeding these old reprobates too much good grain with molasses all over it. The calves are looking some better. They have filled out and their ears are up and their eyes are not runny. The cows, the two of them in the sick pen, are sure getting sassy.

I walked behind the one I call Pretty this morning as I fed, and she smacked me a good one on my left thigh. I am pretty sure the old biddy didn't stop eating when she did it, either! She is not one bit ashamed of kicking the one that feeds her or provides the shelter. Sorta one of those good deeds you will be repaid for, if you know what I mean!

The wet weather puts us in a place where hoof rot is a common visitor. We moved the old cows to about half a pasture this morning to get them to higher ground. We put out more hay and cubes and they will be fine for a week or so till the other half dries up a bit. Most of the cattle look good and have gone through the drenching in pretty good shape -- better than I did!

My friend with the new paint pony came by about noon today to say he had sold the high-dollar horse. Said he made a pretty nice little profit, too. I guess the look on my face was pure shock as he started laughing and said the profit was sure enough little! I asked him why he sold the horse so quick, and he said it was more about the home life than a lack of horse love. Evidently, the ones of us who wear the pants in the family like for them to be washed and ironed pretty regular.

We talked about the interest increase from the feds and he was pretty sure it was gonna make his row to hoe longer and more difficult. The families with credit card debts will be the first to notice, and those companies burn the midnight oil to make another dime. My buddy said his family has decided to pay with cash or do without. Sure makes sense to me.

Can't tell much about the change of the year. This new one is about the same as the old one in looks and smells. I am proud to have lived long enough to see it happen. No, I didn't see it happen, I went to bed after the news just like always. But it is a far piece from the place where I was born. After that man walking on the moon, the whole thing has exploded into technology and Cyber space.

It is my opinion, and everyone has one, my old way of life has flown the coop. The new ways of living are here, and the new ways just don't care if I approve or not! You know how you feel about all the stuff going on around America and in your own family, and most of us sure don't agree with it. Do you suspect the founding fathers would throw up their hands and walk off if they could see it now? I do!

Keep a candle in the window, winter nights are mighty black!
