Lady Pioneers outscored by Lady Eagles but defeat Lady Saints

GENTRY -- The Lady Pioneers got off to a slow start when Huntsville visited Gentry on Jan. 5 and, though they cut their deficit to one point by the end of the half, they couldn't stop the Lady Eagles from soaring higher and taking the game, 50-44.

Brieann Ward and Haley Borgeteien-James, both seniors, scored the only points for the Lady Pioneers in the opening quarter, each hitting a two-pointer. In the second quarter, Mallory Morris put in two deuces and a three-pointer, and Lauren Little, also a senior, put in a deuce and a three-pointer to help the Lady Pioneers recoup lost ground and finish the half down by a single point, 22-21.

The Lady Eagles added 12 in the third and 16 in the final quarter, pulling further ahead of the Lady Pioneers, who scored eight and 15, respectively.

"We missed some shots early in the game that hurt us and got out of rhythm at the end of the third quarter," said Toby Tevebaugh, Gentry's head girls' basketball coach. "Other than that, we played fairly well offensively. On defense we didn't rebound as well as we needed to. The girls played very hard, we just came up a bit short," Tevebaugh said.

Borgeteien-James led Gentry in scoring with 18 points. Morris had eight.

Gentry 50

Shiloh Christian 44

Gentry's Lady Pioneers picked up a big win Friday night against the Lady Saints at Shiloh Christian in Springdale, 50-44.

The Lady Pioneers started off slow and were behind, 18-12, at the end of the first quarter. By the half, they closed the gap to within three points, 27-24. In the third quarter, both teams picked up 10 points. In the final quarter, Gentry held Shiloh to seven points and picked up 16 points of its own for a 50-44 final.

"Shiloh has a lot of quickness in the guard position. As the game went on, we defended better and tried to make those quick guards have difficulty finishing on drives," said Toby Tevebaugh, Gentry's head girls' basketball coach. "Haley James, Haley Hays and Hannah Boss all played well offensively."

Haley Borgeteien-James led the Lady Pioneers in scoring with 22. Hannah Boss had 13 and Haley Hays had 11, with three shots behind the three-point line.

The Friday night win put the Lady Pioneers at 3-1 in conference play and 11-3 for the season. The Gentry girls were scheduled to take on visiting Prairie Grove after press time on Tuesday.
