about town with Decatur's mayor, Bob Tharp

Joy and I want to wish everyone a Happy and Prosperous New Year! Hopefully, a resolution to become more active in your town, for 2016, was a part of your New Year's celebration.

A few things that I want to share with you are: First of all, the month of January is being highlighted this year as "Chamber of Commerce Month." During January, I want to encourage all members to update their information and also remind everyone to join the Chamber of Commerce. Dues are only $10 per year for individual and $100 for a business. This is a wonderful way to stay connected to Decatur. The Chamber meets the first Monday of the month at 5:30 p.m. at the Grand Saving Bank Annex building hospitality room.

Secondly, Arkansas Hunters Education Class will be held at the Decatur Community Building on Saturday, Feb. 6, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. This course will be instructed will be James Barger. Registration is the day of the class.

Finally, the city of Decatur was awarded a TAP grant recently in the amount of $130,000. These funds will be used to build more sidewalks. The initial plan is to complete the sidewalk from the middle school to Rooster St. along Roller Ave. We will build sidewalks from Austin St. to Veterans Park and hopefully go all the way to Mt. Olive. This is a huge grant and we are very thankful. Construction will begin later this year.

Ways to stay connected with local news and events are to read the Westside Eagle Observer newspaper and check the city's website, www.decaturarkansas.com. Your may also email me at [email protected] and follow my Facebook page.

God Bless you and may He grant our community a prosperous New Year!
