Council takes up road damage and repair

HIGHFILL -- Floods and road damage were a major part of Highfill's council meeting on Jan. 15, with discussion focused on road repairs.

According to meeting notes supplied by Stacy Digby, Highfill's mayor, roads were not in good shape following the heavy rains and floods which occurred at the close of 2015, but everything was again passable except Douglas Cemetery Road. As a result, the council approved spending, from the city's savings account, up to $7,500 to make repairs, which will include two new culverts.

Aubrey Long Road also sustained flood damage, but the council decided to look into repair options before making any final repairs.

The council accepted the resignation of Ryan Evans from his post as alderman and voiced gratitude for his years of service to the city.

Anyone interested in filling the vacant Ward 3 position should contact the mayor's office. According to Mayor Digby, candidates for the vacant alderman post must reside in Ward 3 and must posses the qualifications of an elector.

Digby said the council would try to fill the opening at the February meeting.
