DECATUR -- When the Decatur High School seniors walked across the stage at Peterson Gym May 15, the long journey from childhood ended and the road into the adult world began. But just when did that childhood journey begin?

For students of the pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes at Decatur Northside Elementary School, the long journey began with a simple graduation ceremony before family and friends.

The three pre-kindergarten classes held a graduation ceremony May 20 in the Northside cafeteria in Decatur. Sixty future Bulldogs entered the proceedings to the song "Family Time" by Ziggy Marley. After the Pledge of Allegiance, led by the pre-kindergarten students, each class performed two choreographed songs.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, the pre-kindergarten students exited the stage to the song "Try Everything" from the movie "Zootopia" by Shakira.

This marked the final graduation ceremony for the pre-kindergarten students at Northside Elementary. They will move to their new facility near Decatur Middle School in August.

Fifty-seven kindergarten students walked across the stage at Northside May 23. In a scene reminiscent of the May 15 ceremony at Peterson Gym, the kindergarten classes at Northside went through a full commencement exercise complete with a processional, music and a short walk across the stage to receive their diplomas.

For the new first-graders at Northside Elementary School, the long 12-year journey has only just begun.
