DECATUR — With temperatures reaching into the triple digits, area residents are scrambling to find ways to beat the heat. For Decatur area residents, there are two popular ways to escape the heat.
Some Decatur area residents choose to take a refreshing dip in Crystal Lake, which is one mile north of the city. While this is a good way to beat the heat and experience nature first hand, Crystal Lake lacks a clearly defined swimming area.
Most of the swimming activity takes place near the lake's boat launch ramp, which can create a conflict with fishermen waiting to launch their boats.
Crystal Lake is a "swim at your own risk" facility which has no on life guards on duty. It also poses a threat from poisonous snakes such as copperheads and water moccasins which sometimes inhabit the tall grass areas on either side of the ramp.
A safer alternative to Crystal Lake is the Decatur city pool. Swimmers of all ages can partake of the cool, clear water for a mere $2 fee.
The Decatur City Pool celebrated its grand reopening June 13 with free admissions throughout the day. About 100 swimmers took advantage of this special offer as they enjoyed a cool way to escape the heat wave gripping the area.
The pool is located at Decatur's City Park just off of Pool Street. It is open from 12 noon until 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday, weather permitting. Life guards are on duty during pool operation.
