Republic Services new trash collection provider

GRAVETTE -- Citizens of Gravettte may have noticed new blue trash cans being delivered to their homes in the last week. Republic Services of Bella Vista has contracted with the city of Gravette to provide curbside trash collection services beginning July 1. Each customer will receive one 95-gallon cart to use for solid waste disposal.

Some Gravette customers will continue to have their trash picked up on Tuesdays but, for many citizens, their trash pickup day will change. Persons not already on the list to receive informational emails from the city may email [email protected] to receive maps showing trash pickup days in various wards. Citizens may also call city hall, 787-5757, to inquire about their trash pickup schedule. Republic has already announced that, since its service begins the first week of July and the July 4th holiday will be on Monday of that week, trash pickups will be one day later because of the holiday. Regular trash pickup days will resume the second full week of July.

Trash will be collected once a week and trash should be at curbside by 6 a.m. on the customer's scheduled pickup day. The cart handle should be facing away from the street. All trash should be bagged to keep the cans clean and prevent littering on windy days. Customers are asked to place the cans away from tree limbs and low power lines since Republic's trucks will lift the container vertically. Cans should be placed three feet away from the edge of the road and three feet away from any obstructions.

Trash containers are designed to hold only 200 pounds and Republic requests that customers not exceed that limit. If additional containers are needed, they may call 1-800-627-1717 for a second cart at an additional charge. Temporary construction containers may also be requested by calling this number.

Items which should not be placed in the trash container include dirt, sod, concrete, rock, construction or demolition debris, appliances, bulk liquids, household hazardous waste, animal waste, leaves, grass clippings, hot ashes or flammable materials such as oil, gas or paint, batteries, engine parts or tires.

Containers are the property of Republic Services. They will be maintained and replaced at no cost to the customer unless the customer has been negligent or has abused the container. Trash containers should be left at the pickup site if the customer moves away.

Republic has also agreed to provide pickup for one bulky item per week on the customer's regularly scheduled pickup day. Residents who have bulky items to be picked up should call customer service, 1-800-627-1717, to schedule the item weekly. Bulky items include mattresses, couches, chairs and tables that are too large to fit in the polycart provided. This weekly bulky item pickup will take the place of the city's twice-yearly curbside pickups of the past.

There will be no pickup on the following holidays: New Year's Day, Memorial Day, July 4th, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. Service will be delayed one day on these observed holidays. If the holiday falls on a weekend there will be no changes in service.

Persons seeking additional information or having questions may contact Republic Services, 1-800-627-1717 or [email protected].
