First annual Gentry High School career fair set for Thursday

GENTRY -- Gentry High School will hold its first annual career fair for students in grades eight through 12 on Thursday, March 10. It will be a day of career exploration for Gentry students.

The school day will begin in the high school auditorium with a welcoming address by Michael Harvey, chief operating and economic development officer for Northwest Arkansas Council. Following Harvey's address, students will attend scheduled informational sessions throughout the day according to their career interest.

"Our career day creates a critical link between the classroom and the workplace by allowing students to explore various career options to help them make informed educational and career choices," said Terrie Metz, federal programs and curriculum coordinator for the Gentry Public School District. "Students will have the opportunity to tour our new diesel engine technology facility and visit representatives from local colleges and our military forces.

"Living in northwest Arkansas, we are fortunate to have a variety of career fields represented at this event, including those that can be entered immediately after high school graduation all the way up to those careers requiring graduate school education," Metz said. "Example careers represented include the medical professions, logistics, legal, teaching, hospitality, welding, public works, law enforcement, fire fighting, emergency management and engineering, to name a few."

The new diesel engine technology facility will be open for public tours on Thursday evening, starting at 5:30. The facility is located in the bus garage behind the high school. A parent meeting will be held at 6 p.m. in the high school auditorium. Harvey will be the guest speaker for the evening. Randy Barrett, superintendent of Gentry Schools, and Judy Winslett, assistant superintendent, will share with parents new course offerings and programs which will be offered at Gentry High School.
