Pioneers end week with loss to visiting Elks

GENTRY -- The Pioneers' opening winning streak was broken Friday when the visiting Elks from Elkins took an early lead and held the Pioneers to four runs, handing Gentry a 9-4 loss.

Garrett Osbon earned the win, striking out seven for Elkins (1-0). Osbon also had a big day at the plate, going two for three.

The Pioneers scored a solo run in the bottom of the first and another three runs in the fifth, but it wasn't enough to stop the Elks, who picked up four runs in their first at bat, another two in the second, a solo run in the third and two more in the fourth.

Wyatt Clark scored in the first after reaching first on an error and making it home on a walk. Clark singled in the fifth, was advanced to third on a CJ Taylor double to center, and made it home on a third baseman's error. Taylor and Dillon Matthews also crossed the plate in the inning, Taylor as a result of a shortstop error, and Matthews (running for Josh Cochran) on a sacrifice ground ball hit by Zac Adkins.

Clark started the game on the mound and pitched one inning, allowing three hits and five earned runs. Myles McFerron and Tanner Shipp each threw for three innings. Both struck out four. McFerron held the Elks to no hits and no runs during his time on the mound.

Siloam Springs 3, Gravette 1

A two-run third inning was enough for Siloam Springs to get the upper hand againt Gravette in non-conference action on Friday.

Trey Nunnally went 5 innings for Gravette and allowed just one earned run, striking out three. Gravette smacked three extra-base hits as Chase Owens doubled, and Dylan Gruver and Jace Russ each tripled in the loss.
