Lady Pioneers were one and one on the road

GENTRY -- The Lady Pioneers split in games last week, falling 9-7 at Lincoln and winning 4-3 in Elkins.

The Lady Pioneers took an early lead over the Lady Elks when they visited Elkins on Thursday, with a three-run second inning. Mandy Barber, pinch runner for Alyssa Kelton, who walked, scored on a Sabra Philpott single to right field. Christina Barber, who singled to right, scored when Makensi Sweeten singled to left. Philpott then scored on a wild pitch to put Gentry up, 3-0.

But the Lady Elks answered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth and another in the bottom of the sixth to tie things up at three each.

In the seventh, Taylor Hull drove in Lynzey Sikes with the winning run when she hit a fly ball out into left field for a single. Elkins was unable to come back and Gentry brought home the victory, 4-3.

Kelton was on the mound for Gentry. She struck out one.

Hull and Philpott each had RBIs in the game.

The Lady Wolves seemed to have the game well under control early, scoring five runs in the first and another two in the second, but the Lady Pioneers fought back, first with two runs in the fifth and then with five more in the sixth to tie things up. But Gentry was unable to take the lead in the top of the final inning, and Lady Wolves put two more runners across the plate to send the Lady Pioneers home in defeat.

Lincoln had 11 hits in the game, to Gentry's seven.

Alyssa Kelton was on the mound for Gentry. Taylor Hull led in RBIs with two.
