School Bus Accident

— A minor bus accident occurred at the intersection of Brigance and Petersen Roads on Monday morning when a Gentry school bus missed the stop sign in the fog. Two children and two adults were on the bus at the time of the mishap, according to the sheriff's office. No children were injured. One adult was taken to the hospital.

"It was a minor, one-vehicle accident with a serious injury," Randy Barrett, superintendent of Gentry Schools, wrote in a Wednesday email. "An aide on the special education bus suffered a back injury which required surgery to repair.

"That sounds a little conflicting; but, basically, the driver missed a T intersection in the fog, drove through the roadside ditch, through a fence, and out a short way into a pasture area. While I have not seen a police report, I believe the injury occurred when the aide was thrown upward and downward within the confines of the seat as the bus crossed the ditch.

"The bus, by the nature of the students transported on it, has seat belts which the students were wearing. I believe they came on to school afterwards and had no reported injuries. All our drivers wear seat belts and the driver had no reported injuries either.

"No citation was issued the driver by the investigating officers," Barrett wrote.
