Springtown to consider vacating streets

SPRINGTOWN -- The town council, at its May 10 meeting, approved holding a public hearing in regard to a petition to close a portion of Spring Street and a portion of 3rd Street in the town of Springtown which, according to the petition, have not been used by the town as streets for more than five years.

The petition was signed by Jackie Michelle Early, Preston L. and Karee L. Barrett, and Albie and Helen Pearson, who, according to the petition, own the lands adjacent to the streets and would receive the vacated lands to the middle of the street where their lands are adjacent to the vacated streets.

Paul Lemke, town resident, argued against granting the petition and giving city property to the adjacent land owners. He also accused Preston Barrett, mayor of Springtown, of lying and saying Lemke had told the county not to grade the road in front of the mayor's house and that a resident did not want his road paved. Barrett denied the allegations and said they were all false.

Lemke also said the town had not, in many years, done any maintenance work on Candleglow Road. He said his business generated more tax money for the town than any other and he felt like the town should spend a little bit on his road.

Dean Klingman, road coordinator for the Benton County Road Department, was present at the May 10 meeting and told the council that Aubrey Long Road and Bredehoeft Road were scheduled to be paved from the Aubrey Long Bridge to Y City Road.
