DECATUR -- The mood at Peterson Gym was full of excitement as the Decatur junior Lady Bulldogs opened their 2016-17 basketball season Nov. 10 against the Eureka Springs Highlanders.

The Highlanders quickly took control of the game in the opening minutes of the first quarter. Eureka Springs set the tempo for the rest of the game as they continued their fast-paced pressure offense against the struggling Lady Bulldogs.

The Lady Bulldogs tried to fight back but the Highlanders proved too much and took the victory, 39 to 10.

With less than 24 hours to regroup before their next outing against the Northwest Arkansas Classical Academy from Rogers on Nov. 11, the junior Lady Bulldogs took the court with a different attitude than the night before. Decatur took control of the game, leading by as much as 10 points through the third quarter. The Bulldog defense kept the Spartans at bay and secured the first victory of the season, 28 to 19.

Kaylee Morales led the scoring for the Bulldogs. Destiny Mejia, Abby Tilley and Kaylee Morales turned in outstanding performances on defense, forcing the Spartans to make several mistakes which resulted in missed scoring opportunities.

Both the junior and senior girls were scheduled to be in action against the West Fork Tigers at the Tiger Dome in West Fork on Tuesday.
