— Sergeant Charles "Chuck" Skaggs was chosen to be the new police chief for the city of Gravette last week, according to an announcement made by Mayor Kurt Maddox. Skaggs has been serving as the interim police chief and last Wednesday was offered the permanent position. He accepted the position and has assumed command.

Skaggs underwent an extensive investigation by a search committee made up of several community members and city officials. He was one of seven candidates interviewed. The committee indicated they were proud to recommend Sergeant Skaggs as one of their top picks.

Skaggs is well known in Gravette. He has served in various capacities with the Gravette Police Department and the Gravette Fire Department since 1995. In addition to six years of service in the U.S. Army, Skaggs has undergone training at the Arkansas Law Enforcement Training Academy, is a certified law-enforcement instructor and is a member of the Arkansas Association of Chiefs of Police. He was promoted to sergeant in mid-2015 and has worked extensively with youth as a school resource officer.

The Gravette Police Department is comprised of nine full-time officers, including the chief and school resource officers, as well as several part-time officers, who take pride in providing 24-7 law enforcement and protection for the citizens of Gravette.
