GRAVETTE -- One of the customers who came into Larry Jones' Peace, Love and Coffee shop last Tuesday afternoon got more than he bargained for. A high school student who came up to order a drink after classes drove into the parking lot behind the coffee shop. Part of the ground gave way and his pickup tire fell through into a hole that appeared in the ground.
The sinkhole that developed appeared to be between seven feet and nine feet deep and the opening extended back toward the shop some four to five feet. A pipe running north and south could be seen between the opening and the shop building.
City employees came up a short time later and examined the hole. Corey Reardon, city water department manager, identified the pipe as a working city water line. A sewer line was also found in the opening but Reardon said it was no longer in use.
Since the hole was on private property, Jones was told it was his responsibility to fill the opening. Sam Green, owner of Green Heart Realty, helped him fill the sinkhole on Wednesday.
