Maysville EH Club

MAYSVILLE -- The Maysville Extension Homemakers Club members met at the community building Sept. 22 for the regular meeting. Bert Ballman was hostess for the lunch of biscuits and sausage gravy. The meeting was called to order and the welcome was given by President Orpha Wardlaw at 1 p.m. Melinda Crawley led us in a song entitled "Hello."

We all love to hear the word "hello" spoken to us wherever we may go. Its full of friendship and good cheer and warms the heart up so! So when e'er we meet like friends, let's greet each other with hello!

After the Pledge of Allegiance, Melinda gave an inspirational reading entitled "Fragile Moments."

Bert Ballman gave the lesson entitled "Make Your Meals Yummy Using Herbs." There is no question that what we eat affects our health. Years of research have shown that. A high fat diet increases the risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Too much sodium can lead to high blood pressure in some people. Healthy people over the age of 2 should limit dietary fat and sodium intake. An easy way to reduce fat and salt in your diet is cooking with herbs to add flavor. The art of using herbs and spices is in learning how to add and how to mix flavors. It is best to start with a tested recipe. Then add more or less to suit your taste. The flavor of herbs and spices becomes weaker if cooked for a long time. When a recipe will be cooked for an hour or more, add seasoning about 45 minutes before it is done.

Bert talked about the danger of basal cell carcinoma (a type of skin cancer) and the importance of regular examination of the skin for any new or unusual growths or changes in the size, shape or color of an existing spot, which are keys to finding and treating skin cancers early. If you find anything suspicious, you should discuss it with your primary care physician or a dermatologist.

Gwen gave an eye opener on rooting tomato vines for fall-winter tomatoes. Laura Kinney told how to grow more Romaine lettuce by cutting off the bottom of lettuce and placing in water. In about three weeks, you will have a new head of lettuce. Nikki Crawley told about a planter made from pallets. Cultural art, given by Bert Ballman, was pumpkins decorated for the table with colorful ribbons and tape. Orpha Wardlaw showed quilt blocks she was making at quilting class. Robin Reichardt demonstrated making beads from pieces of dried potatoes and then painting them.

Secretary Gwen Singleton called the roll, which was answered by 13 members. Minutes were read and financial report given. Volunteer hours and meeting reports were turned in. Reports were given on the county fair, August outing (Skyline Printing tour and lunch at Maysville Handi-Stop) and bylaws meeting by Jane Wilber. Jane read the old bylaws. Then Ginger Yocum gave the committee's recommendations for revisions or discontinuing outdated ones.

President Orpha, gave reminders on upcoming events: Fundraiser Bean Supper on Oct. 1, Crafts and More Fair Oct. 7-8, Cultural Art workshop Oct. 20, Club Project Workshop Oct. 25, Writing Memoir Class Oct. 29, County Council Nov. 18 -- Dianna Afuvai volunteered to make our club's centerpiece. We discussed a project for the Children's Shelter. Ginger Yocum will contact the shelter for more information. Meeting adjourned with a benediction.
