GRAVETTE -- "Pawsitive" and Wise student (PAWS) winners at Glenn Duffy Elementary School were honored at the school's monthly assembly Monday, April 3. Students were recognized and presented T-shirts and certificates. PAWS award winners for the month of March are Ali Brown of Gravette, Rylea Daylong of Gravette, Aubree Fisher of Sulphur Springs, Brennon Hittson of Gravette, Bryson McLaughlin of Gravette and Isaac Nichols of Bella Vista.

The Glenn Duffy Elementary PAWS program incorporates character education and positive behavior into the school community. Each month PAWS skills are chosen and discussed in classroom guidance in relation to character education.

"Our school staff continuously watch for opportunities to compliment students for terrific character, behavior or effort," said Zane Vanderpool, Glenn Duffy Elementary principal.

The character word for this month is "effort." This is defined as the total work done to achieve a particular end. Karen Benson, manager of the Gravette Public Library, was guest speaker for the assembly and taught the children about the character word. Benson said that, without showing effort, students would not have received the awards or recognition they did. She also related how students can turn their best efforts into success in classwork or testing. Amelia Earhart is quoted as saying, "It is easier to start something than it is to finish it." Benson discussed how the children should keep on keepin' on so that their best efforts may be recognized.

The social skill for the month is "ignoring." Though sometimes this comes naturally for many of us, some situations require that we actually practice the steps to ignore. Second grade teachers modeled for students how to ignore others while trying to focus on tasks such as reading independently or doing homework. Steps are to 1) drop your head like a turtle, 2) raise your shoulders and put your hands by your sides, 3) focus on your work or activity and 4) be quiet and not say anything to the person distracting you. Second grade teachers are Jennifer Davis, Angie Denver, Vicki Holloway, Jared Magness, Amber Sisemore and Traci Rutledge.
