Decatur schools ready for new school year

DECATUR -- Decatur Public School District is gearing up for the 2017-2018 school year. Decatur Northside Elementary will continue to serve students in grades K-4.

Pre-K classes will begin their second year at the main campus at 1498 Stadium Drive on Arkansas Highway 102.

The school district is in the process of remodeling the playground that will be used for Pre-K and adding a greenhouse for hands-on learning. Drop-off and pickup areas for Pre-K will not be affected by the construction at the Middle School because both driveways in front of the Pre-K Center and Decatur High School cafeteria will remain open throughout the school year. The lot and driveways in front of the Middle School will be closed starting on the first day of school. These drives will be closed during most of the school year.

Decatur Middle School begins this year as a School of Innovation.

"Our fifth- through eighth-grade students now have an environment that is centered on personalized learning. Our staff is working hard to create a project-based curriculum that prepares our students to be successful in all phases of life," said Superintendent Jeff Gravette.

Construction of the new Middle School gymnasium and offices will be ongoing throughout the 2017-2018 school year.

Decatur High School will begin this school year as an exploratory school for the School of Innovation Grant. The High School and Middle School are working together to create a curriculum and student-centered environment that can help with the transition between the Middle School and High School.

Open house for all schools will be August 10. Schools will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. that day. Teachers and administrators will be available to help with schedules and making sure everything is ready to go for students on the first day of school, August 14.
